Chapter Six

Bennett

The morning dawns bright through the warped glass windows of the drawing room. I wake with Carrie in my arms, her warm, curvy body tucked against me. She’s holding a flashlight in one hand and snoring lightly. I brush some of her brown curls off of her face. When she doesn’t stir, I stand and quietly make my way out of the room, searching for the bathroom.

I do my business and then brush my teeth, glad that a toothbrush is at least one thing I didn’t forget to pack. There’s nothing that will make me happier than going back into the drawing room and waking Carrie up with another kiss.

Last night turned out even better than I could have imagined. I’ve always thought that the tension between us was more than rivalry. We’ve always been drawn to one another, but circumstances kept her pushing me away. But last night, she really opened up to me, and I understood for the first time what she needs. She needs to feel a real connection with someone she can trust. Someone who can help her believe in love again.

I know I can be that person. I just have to convince her to give me a chance to prove it to her. And last night brought us one step closer to that.

Not to mention we had an apparition sighting that I’m pretty sure I caught on camera.

It doesn’t get much better than that.

Turning off the water, I take one last look in the mirror, unable to keep the grin off my face. Then, I turn and walk back down the hall to the drawing room, feeling like I’m on cloud nine.

But when I round the doorway and step inside, I find Carrie already awake. Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail and the sleeping bag is already rolled up on the couch beside her backpack. She’s standing with my sweater in one hand and the small, black camera in the other.

“What is this?” she asks. But I can tell by the cool detachment in her voice that she already knows.

“Carrie—”

“Don’t,” she interrupts. She drops the camera and the sweater onto the couch.

“I can explain.”

She holds up a hand, and with a small, mirthless laugh, says, “I don’t need you to. I know this drill. I’ve lived it my whole life. It’s just more of the same.” She whirls on me angrily. “I really let you in last night. For once—for once—I let myself believe that someone actually cared about me. Not about my mom. Not about some make-believe afterlife. Me. Carrie Clarke. The real, live person.”

“I do care about you, Carrie,” I try to interject.

As she throws things into her backpack, she keeps ranting. “What are you going to do? An exposé on Candy Clarke’s damaged daughter? I can see it now.” She holds her hand up like she’s reading a marquee. “Inside the mind of a non-believer.”

“That’s not what this is at all,” I say loudly, finally working up the nerve to reach around her and grab my sweater, pulling it on over my head as she glares at me.
